What does Qi Gong mean?
Qi Gong (pronounced chee-gung) is a form of spiritual exercise that has origins thousands of years old from ancient China. Qi translated strictly into English means energy but in Chinese culture it is often referring to a “life-force” that is present in every object in the universe. Gong is Chinese for accomplishment or rather a skill that is learned through routine practice. Together Qi Gong can be translated as “cultivating energy” and this represents the entire focus of the exercise.
The History of Qi Gong
Qi Gong has 4,000 year old roots in China and it was discovered to be used in medicine as well as martial arts. Qi Gong was a commonly practiced exercise in China until the middle of the 20th century when the communist movement wanted to do away with any holistic or non traditional medicine. The efforts to get rid of Qi Gong ended up bolstering it and the practice eventually made its way to America and other parts of the world in the 1970s due to increasing globalization.
What does Qi Gong involve?
Qi Gong involves connecting the mind, body, and spirit similar to Yoga and Tai Chi but it is unique in its own right. In Chinese culture, free flowing Qi that passes through the body is essential to good health. The main goal of Qi Gong is to improve the quality of life by channeling, strengthening, and recirculating Qi through breathing techniques, meditation, and controlled movements. Qi Gong practices can be separated into three categories:
Medical or healing Qi Gong represents the medicinal and self healing aspect of ancient Chinese medicine. Medical Qi Gong mainly focuses on stress management and effectively managing stress reduces negative physiological responses such as anxiety, frustration, and even hypertension.
Martial Qi Gong can heighten physical and mental prowess in sports and other physical activities. Martial Qi Gong focuses on elevating strength, agility, balance, flexibility, and injury resistance. Athletes who practice martial Qi gong can improve their abilities regardless of the sport they play
Spiritual Qi Gong increases self esteem, self awareness, and peace of mind.
Everyone Can Benefit From Qi Gong
The beauty of Qi Gong is that anyone, regardless of physical ability, can practice it and gain from it. Everyone can benefit from the fruits of a strong connection with the mind, body, and spirit. Children, sports athletes, professional fighters, office workers, and even seniors can all benefit from: increased concentration, better mental health, a more balanced immune system, a more positive outlook on life, and reduced stress .
