Working at a desk job forces people to sit for most of the day, at a desk, in meetings, and while commuting. Most people also sit down and relax for a few hours when they get home. Unfortunately, sitting for most of your workday can lead to back problems, reduced circulation, obesity, heart attacks, and even death. You can stay healthy, increase your productivity and energy levels, and lower your medical bills with these simple tips to stay healthy with a desk job.
Take Short Breaks Often
Leaving your desk gives you a chance to stretch your legs, get a little exercise, and give your brain a rest. Even standing next to your desk and stretching occasionally can prevent back problems caused by sitting for long periods of time. Walk to the bathroom or water cooler occasionally, and walk to your boss’ office when you need to talk instead of waiting for him or her to come to you.
Make Your Own Lunch
Making your own lunch is healthier and less expensive than visiting your office’s cafeteria or a fast food restaurant every day. You’ll also have time to take an actual break on your lunch break. Many jobs only give people half an hour for lunch, which is just enough time for you to rush to a fast food place, stand in line, and eat in your car on your way back to work. If you pack your lunch, you can enjoy the sunshine while you eat in a nearby park or take a leisurely walk after you finish your meal.
Exercise
Make sure you exercise a few times per week. Even light housework will help you burn some calories, and going to a gym can improve your mood and help you get in shape. A gym is also a great place to relax and meet new friends.
